First home of leading Chinatown organization
This building was the headquarters of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, the unofficial government of Chinatown, for many years. Built in 1888, it is noted for being “the first genuine Chinese building in New York,” because it was entirely constructed by Chinese carpenters, engineers, masons and woodworkers. The organization is now located at 62 Mott Street in a building that houses the CCBA headquarters, the New York Chinese School, an auditorium, sports facilities, and street front stores.
This building was once the most important location in Chinatown and the headquarters of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, the unofficial government of the area. The organization mediated disputes and served as the conduit between the Chinese community and the official government of the city.
