The center of New York's garment design, manufacturing and sale
So many stores close together in a time when few people sewed their own clothes. Does this exist anywhere else in the country? Some of the oldest stores remind me of the era of the dressmaker, couture fashion. I have been shopping here since the 1960s when I was a shopper for costume designers. Now many owners are Indian. In earlier times they were Italian and Jewish. The New York Times is building on 40th and Eighth Avenue, so the best stores on 40th will go.
