Historic headquarters of a progressive Lower East Side community services center
The Settlement headquarters is three tenement houses, which were built in the first half of the 19th century. They have been beautifully and historically preserved. Several interior walls have been removed so that the three facades comprise one office building.
The building is the site of a great deal of Lower East Side history. Not only did Lillian Wald live here, but such characters as Margaret Sanger and Jacob Riis passed through, and the NAACP was founded in the second floor dining room.
I am biased because I work here, but I think the headquarters are truly special and worthy of recognition! (February, 2011)
