The James Beard House is a well-preserved 19th century townhouse where James Beard, the noted cookbook author and cooking teacher lived and worked. His cooking classes were held in the kitchen, which looks very much like it did when he lived there. It is the current home of the James Beard Foundation.

During the 1970s and early 1980s, until he died in January 1985, this house was a Mecca for every food writer, cookbook writer (including Julia Child), food editor, aspiring chef - in fact, for just about everyone who was in the food world. James Beard was a famous presence in Greenwich Village even earlier, when he lived at other locations there.

Many of the architectural details of the structure are still intact. The building was minimally renovated to accommodate the activities of the James Beard Foundation.

The James Beard House is part of the Greenwich Village Historical District, so it will never change.
