This was a two-block shopping area for mostly East European, Jewish, and Italian immigrant communities. The repeated stories of the comic, memorable entrepreneurs still remain with the ex-residents. It was at its height in the 1930s and 1940s. As the offspring took advantage of their education, they moved to the suburbs. There was crime, such as murder of its outstanding character, Jake the Pickleman.
