Place Matters Profile

Nominations

Sean Holly

In the 1940s-50s, it was one of the most beautiful movie houses with gold leaf, velvet hangings and an organ. It was a first-run house; movies stayed for weeks. Neighborhood groups went by "parish"--people identified each other by parish. East of Broadway were Jewish, German and Italian shopkeepers. The mix on the street was also in the theatre.
