Brick and brownstone detailed apartments built for the executives of the Hearn department store
The Ardea was built as a "hotel-boarding house" in 1893 by George A. Hearn, the owner of a large department store on 14th Street. Intended for the families of Hearn department store executives, each apartment had three bedrooms and a maid's quarter. The architect John B. Snook designed the Ardea, giving it elegant iron balconies and refined brick and brownstone detailing.
Built as an apartment hotel to house families of executives of the Hearn Department Store, this is an unusual structure for this part of the Village.
