Park named after Roy Wilkins, famed civil rights leader and former NAACP president
Formerly the grounds of the St. Albans Naval Hospital, it is now a park with a theatre, a football field, track, senior citizens' garden and other facilities. It is an expanse of green in a heavily traveled neighborhood. Merrick Boulevard is the spine of southeast Queens, connecting it to downtown Jamaica and to Nassau County. The park has many events such as the Universoul Circus. A rodeo once was held there, but has not happened for a few years. Springfield Rifles local youth football team plays there, and there is a summer basketball tournament each year. The Park is named after a former leader of the NAACP. (September 2011)
