Place Matters Profile

From 1954 to 1964, this non-descript commercial building was the "after-hours headquarters" for hundreds of jazz musicians, including Thelonious Monk, Hall Overton, Miles Davis and Charles Mingus. The scene at 821 Sixth was extensively documented by photographer W. Eugene Smith, who lived in the building for seven years.
