Now a park, the club once offered clay courts and a clubhouse
The South Oxford Tennis Club in Fort Greene was originally an Italianate tent structure. Because of neglect, three fires, raiding and irreparable damage, it was demolished by the city, its most recent owners. The lot has since been turned into a green space - a community garden, now called South Oxford Park.
This Tennis Club was and should once again become one of this community's special attractions for the benefit of all residents. The building could provide sufficient revenue to protect and care for the three tennis courts. It is a beautiful, Italianate tent structure currently in the hands of the Park's Department, which should be prevented from demolishing it. The South Oxford Tennis Club should be turned to the private sector or a community-based organization.
I used to live a few houses down from this tennis club. At least during the 90's it was not neglected. In the evenings, it was rented out as a gay dance club which at least allowed for maintenance. Now after over a decade of the City being hostile towards any real nightlife, we find it in this decayed condition. The South Oxford Tennis Club was and should once again become one of this community's special attractions for the benefit of all residents. The building could provide sufficient revenue to protect and care for the three tennis courts. It is a beautiful, Italianate tent structure currently in the hands of the Park's Department, which should be prevented from demolishing it. The South Oxford Tennis Club should be turned to the private sector or a community-based organization. Please do not demolish this building with its rich history. (July 2010)
