Bank Street College of Education has been a leader in progressive child-centered teacher education for more than 80 years. The College is composed of a Graduate School of Education, a model School for Children, an onsite Family Center, a Division of Continuing Education, and a Publications and Media Group.

Bank Street worked with the Federal government to design the Civil Rights Act of 1965, as well as the national Head Start and Follow Through programs. The school's Bank Street Writers Laboratory was founded to encourage authors to produce children's literature that is consistent with the Bank Street understanding of how children develop. Among the writers who have been affiliated with the Lab are Margaret Wise Brown, author of Good Night Moon, and Maurice Sendak, author of Where the Wild Things Are. In 1981, Bank Street was awarded a federal grant to create the television series The Voyage of the Mimi.

Nominations

Lots of children, families, staff and educators at Bank Street work to make their community a better place for everyone. They are interested in learning about cultural geography, literature, math, science--all the disciplines--and also using what they understand. It is housed in a wonderful building and uses the world as its learning lab.
