Site of a 19th century seaside resort
Where a stretch of the Belt Parkway now lies, there was once a bathing beach that extended from the Narrows to Cropsey Avenue. In the 19th century, Bath Beach was a fashionable resort dotted with hotels and mansions.
There were still farms in Bath Beach until the 1940s. George Washington stayed at a house on 18th Avenue, between 84th and 83rd Streets, which is now a park. There is also the famous Ulmer Park where soldiers and their families lived during WWII. Also, Fort Lafayette is now the Tower for the Verrazano Bridge on the Brooklyn side.
